“Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.” – Step Seven
Today, Step Four suggests a “searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves,” Step Five an admission to God, ourselves and another person the exact nature of our wrongs and Step Six to be willing for God to remove our character defects. Step Seven is the culmination of the gut-wrenching and brutally honest product of the previous three steps and, in fact, some may be eager to ask their Higher Power to remove those defects. And in asking humbly, we do so in absolute honesty, a commitment to purge those demonic traits and for the strength and courage not to reclaim them. An unwritten footnote to this step: in recovery, we no longer possess the luxury to hold onto a defect we don’t want or aren’t ready to surrender. Today, I’m ready to ask my Higher Power to unburden me of the weight of the shortcomings of my own making. And our common journey continues. Step by step. – Chris M., 2019
